Aged Parent Visa

Once settled in Australia, many migrants want their elderly parents to come live with them, especially when they need each other’s companionship the most.

There are numerous parent visas categories available in Australia.

  • Contributory Parent (Temporary) Visa (subclass 173)
  • Contributory Parent Visa (subclass 143)

Before deciding the exact application for you it is highly recommended to check eligibility criterion: You might be eligible for a parent visa if:

  • you have a child who is an Australian citizen, an Australian permanent resident, or an eligible New Zealand citizen
  • your child has been living in Australia lawfully for at least 2 years before you lodge your visa application

  • you meet health and character requirements.

Subclass 173 allows parents of a settled Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen to settle in Australia on a temporary basis for a period of 2 years. If parents’ desires to live permanently in Australia they can apply for a Contributory Parent Visa (subclass 143).

You can also include your partner and your or your partner’s child or step-child in your application. The family who is granted this visa has the same rights and obligations as you and can do the same things as you.

This visa lets you live, work and study in Australia for up to two years. You will eligible to get enrolled in Medicare services. Once subclass 173 is granted, you can travel to and from Australia as many times as you want for two years.

You cannot extend or re-apply for Subclass 173 visa. You need to be outside Australia at the time of grant of this visa application.

Subclass 143 allows parents of a settled Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen to settle in Australia indefinitely. This visa lets you stay in Australia indefinitely along with opportunities for work and study. Enroll in Medicare services. You can sponsor eligible relatives for permanent residence travel to and from Australia for five years and apply for Australian citizenship if you meet eligibility criterion.

You can also add your partner and your or your partner’s child or step-child in your application. The family who is granted this visa has the same rights and obligations as you and can do the same things as you. You need to be outside Australia at the time of grant of this visa application.

  1. Contributory Aged Parent visa (subclass 864). This is also a permanent visa. It is processed faster but costs more than subclass 804 visa.
  2. Contributory Aged Parent (Temporary) visa (subclass 884) in 1st step and then a permanent Contributory Aged Parent visa (subclass 864). This two-step process is faster but costs more than subclass 804 visa.
